ALMEIRIM

Almeirim is a Portuguese city. Located in Ribatejo, it belongs to the district of Santarém, which has about 11 700 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with 222.12 km² of area and 23 376 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes (Almeirim, Benfica do Ribatejo, Fazendas de Almeirim, and Raposa). The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Alpiarça, to the east and northeast by Chamusca, to the south by Coruche and Salvaterra de Magos, to the west by Cartaxo, and to the northwest by Santarém.
With its magnificent hunting grounds, which stretched for a long time, the neighborhood of Santarém, near the Tagus and also Lisbon, with easy access by the river, Almeirim became, from the start, the favorite place of the kings of the II dynasty and the winter resort frequented by numerous members of the Court, in such a way that it was considered the "Winter Sintra", in the 16th century.
Almeirim was therefore the ideal place to rest.
During the time that Almeirim was sought out as a summer resort, many illustrious people strolled through the streets of the borough and populated the Paço Real: Gil Vicente, the father of Portuguese theater, was one of these personalities.
