Ourém, is a Portuguese city belonging to the district of Santarém, province of Beira Litoral, in the Center region and sub-region of the Middle Tejo, in Portugal, with about 12 994 inhabitants. The city contains two parishes inserted in its urban area. Ourém is a prosperous city, both ancient (it has a castle) and modern, with long avenues.
It is the seat of a municipality with 416.68 km² of area and 45 932 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 13 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Pombal, to the northeast by Alvaiázere, to the east by Ferreira do Zêzere and Tomar, to the southeast by Torres Novas (and Serra de Aire), to the southwest by Alcanena, and to the west by Batalha and Leiria.
Ourém is about 26 km from the city of Leiria, using the EN 113 and about 72 km from the city of Santarém, using the EN 356 / A1.
The historical nucleus developed around the Castle of Ourém.
Greatly affected by the 1755 Earthquake, the head of the municipality moved to Vila Nova.
It was set on fire by the French Army during the Third French Invasion in late 1810, with only a few houses left.
In 1841 the county seat moved from the historic area of ​​the castle to the valley where it is currently located, to Vila Nova.
